As I keep a close eye on the terrorist within called the mind, I began to understand its tricks a little more. I noticed that everything that makes me feel separate from others, always causes me pain. As I reflect back on moments I felt completely peaceful, I recognize that they all have one thing in common: oneness. When I feel one with the present moment, with the cosmic play we call relationships, with even myself, I feel completely peaceful. It is when my mind jumps in and creates a story about how there is a separation between me and others, either by making me feel superior or inferior, that I feel pain. It is obvious that feeling inferior, inadequate and not good enough causes pain. What’s not so obvious is how feeling better, more righteous than others causes pain. This can manifest itself as anger, judgment, resentment, isolation or being dismissive. Which are all emotions that can potentially cause pain to both people. I recognize that it is a lie. All beings are equally good. What is different is our expression of love. Some of us have a clear expression of love, while others have a clouded expression of it. Even the same person can have moments of spontaneous outpouring of love, while at other times desperate cries for love can be manifested as disease, conflict and pain. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.
