Empower Your Life with Yoga- A foundational interactive exploration of the body from a therapeutic yoga perspective
16-18 April 2015

Picture
Chris Kummer presents a practical workshop series that introduces the basis for building healthy habits to enhance yoga practice and daily life.
Through movement anatomy, yoga practice and simple hands on techniques, Chris offers basic concepts and foundations for well-balanced postures.
Common problems might only show up after years of yoga practice or are simply noticed as ‘feeling old’. By bringing increased awareness to our bodies and movement through yoga practice and anatomical explorations, we can avoid and improve our well-being.
These workshops outline principles of posture, support and movement applicable to yoga practice and other activities. Participation is open to anyone with an interest in movement.

The Schedule

Thursday 16th April
6:00-8:30pm Building the Foundation – The Feet

As human beings we have the ability to stand and walk on our feet. This delicate balance is achieved and maintained by multiple interactions of body structures. Steadiness, balance and integrated strength in postures originate at the feet. This workshop focuses on the feet, their arches, support and connection to the rest of the body.
Learn about the fascia, the tissue throughout our bodies that yoga asana seems to be tailored for.
We explore foot positions, movements and influences on the experiences of various postures. Many of the principles we discover are applicable to other parts of the body.

Friday 17th of April
3-5:30pm Hip – Hip – Hooray!

The pelvis and hips are the foundation of the spine and torso. Control of this area – a balance of mobility and strength – is vital for pain free posture, internal organ health and enjoyment of yoga practices.
In this workshop you will learn to distinguish and use the major pelvic mover and stabilizer muscles from spinal and upper body muscles. Build a practice that allows for greater stability, pain-free knees and lightness in the body.
Stability versus mobility of the sacro-iliac joint and hip joint is addressed through an exploration of common standing poses.
Bring your legs and hips, along with a curiosity for yoga and the body.

6-8:30pm Free the Spine
The spine is the central column of our body. In asana practices it is exposed to constantly changing positions and alignments. For many, this area of the body can be a source of unnecessary discomfort.
This workshop explores the internal structures that move and hold the spine and back area. We will practice and experience the effects of bending the spine in all directions, including rotations and transitions to establish a safe and useful yoga practice suited to the individual person.
Get introduced to the different levels of biomechanics of spinal bends, and the surprising role of the sacrum in backward bends.

Saturday 18th of April
3-5:30pm Shoulder Stability

In yoga asana practice our bodies often experience gravity and the world through the support of your arms. Finding functional support and connection through our shoulders requires layers of muscles, bones and soft tissues to synchronize their alignment.
This workshop highlights the rhythm and dance of the shoulder blade and arm bone for efficient and free transfer of forces. Finding the right engagement around the shoulders creates confidence in stability while shifting effort to the stronger muscle areas designed for supporting this highly mobile joint.
We will practice various shoulder positions to best match the type of pose practiced. Offset stress impacts on your shoulders by learning simple techniques to free tension and restrictions around them.

6-8:30pm The Knee, Alignment and Practice
This amazing joint often emerges unhappy after asana practice or even a long time standing or walking. This class brings together the principles and ideas of the previous workshops to develop a more integrative practice for healthier knees.
Understand and learn personal and individual alignments, engagements and adjustments for making our practice useful and safe.
We will practice examples of all posture types, demonstrating the aspects of whole body alignment.
Transform your yoga practice to a more enjoyable and enhanced tool for greater health and well-being.
